The Red Sox held a series of rosters Thursday morning, most notably the recovery of right-handed relief workers Justin Slaten IL from 60 days. This move has enabled Boston’s 40-man lineup to achieve its capabilities. They had a vacancy before after a complete infielder Abraham Toro. The Red Sox also activates outfielders Rob Refsnyder From the list of injured 10 days. To open up the active lineup of Slaten and Refsnyder, they chose Southpaw Jovani Moran Three people to Worcester Nathaniel Low On the paternity test list (he can spend up to three days).
Slaten, 27, came to Boston in his second season as a rookie in 2024, throwing 55 1/3 innings with 2.93 ERA, hitting out 25.9% of three-pointers, walking a small walk rate and high ball votes. He also achieved good results in 2025, despite the low rate, recorded 3.47 ERA in 23 1/3 frames. He has been on the injured list since late May.
Slaten’s strikeout rate dropped to 17.8%, which is probably partly due to a substantial drop in his slider usage. He threw nearly 25% of the sliders in 24 years, but dropped to 8% in 25 years, while favoring his curveball (’24 years at 8.4%, 25% at 21.6% in ’25). Slaten’s walking rate has almost doubled to as high as 7.8%, but is still better than average. Maintaining a 4% walk rate is always tough — it’s tough for any pitcher — especially considering Slaten’s 8.5% walk rate in his last minor league season.
Even with some modest steps this year, Slaten is a big arm that can significantly improve Alex Coracowshed. He has been in effect since his first day of professionalism, quickly entering the high-rate role last year, actually seeing a bump in speed before IL placement, with his four sales rising from 96.4 mph last year to 97 mph in 2025.
