Research shows that microtransactions account for 58% of PC video game revenue in 2024

According to a report by research firm Newzoo, microtransactions — small purchases made by video gamers on merchandise like clothing or gestures, including Fortnite and Roblox — continues to account for the majority of PC gaming revenue and adds 58% of gaming companies’ revenue.
Funding from PC game microtransactions grew 1.4% in PC game sales in 2024, totaling $24.4 billion in PC game sales of $37.3 billion, according to 2025 PC game sales.
Downloadable content (usually other game-level or bonus content) has also increased by nearly a percentage point, accounting for $5.8 billion last year.
Microtransactions have been controversial among gamers, some of whom would rather pay a fixed fee for game content than pay a step-by-step payment for rewarding virtual merchandise or game additions. But according to the research report, they are very popular in game franchises including Fortnite, Roblox and Dutase Calls Calls.
