Several high-rise evacuations in Bangkok may be evacuated
Monday appeared to be after the aftershocks, with several high-rise buildings in Bangkok on Monday three days after a deadly 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck neighboring Myanmar.
State TV reported at least 1,700 people died in Myanmar and another 3,400 were injured so far. Fierce search and rescue efforts continued Monday in Myanmar and neighboring Thailand, with many still missing.
Officials say casualties could increase by thousands due to the proximity of densely populated areas and the vulnerability of many buildings.
Even though the U.S. Geological Survey has not recorded a new earthquake, the area is still feeling aftershocks.
“I felt it, even though it was much lighter than the earthquake on Friday,” a Bangkok office worker told the DPA, adding: “I think the authorities just want to play safely right now.”
With dozens of colleagues, workers stood on the street in front of the office building of Tiscota.
Other high-rise buildings, including the Bangkok shopping mall, the criminal court building and various government offices, have also been evacuated, according to Khaosod newspapers and witnesses.
The sirens of emergency vehicles can be heard throughout the city.
