The local governor’s office told Reuters that the victim’s nationality was not confirmed when a tourist submarine sank in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Hurghada on Thursday.
The Russian consulate in Helgada said that in addition to the crew, there are also submarines named “Sinbad” and there are 45 Russian tourists on board.
The consulate said four people died, but did not specify whether they were Russian. Two city officials told the Associated Press that nine officials were injured.
“According to the initial data, most of the people on board were rescued and taken to hotels and hospitals in Helgada,” the consulate said.
The consulate added that the fate of several tourists is still being clarified.
According to a statement issued by the Red Sea Province, emergency personnel were able to rescue 29 people.
It is not clear what caused the submarine to sink.
Known for its coral reefs and marine life, the Red Sea is a major hub for Egypt’s tourism industry and plays a crucial role in the country’s economy. However, due to the dangers caused by conflict in the region, many travel companies stopped or restricted travel in the Red Sea.
In November, a tourist boat tilted down the coast of Egypt’s Red Sea, killing four people.
