Slovak Prime Minister’s assassination suspect is prosecuted on terrorist charges

Slovakia (AP) Bratislava (AP) – Prosecutors said Monday that the suspect was charged last year with Slovakia populist Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Fico, a split figure in Slovakia’s pro-Russian stance, was shot dead in the abdomen on May 15 when he greeted supporters in the town of Handlova and has since recovered from multiple wounds.

The alleged assaulter was identified only by prosecutors as JC and was arrested immediately after the attack. Police investigated him last month and suggested he face trial. It is not clear when the trial will take place.

The suspect was initially charged with attempted murder. Prosecutors dropped the charge in July, according to evidence obtained by investigators, and said they were seeking more serious charges of more serious charges for the terrorist attack, but they did not provide further details.

Government officials initially said they believed the attack was politically motivated and committed by the “lonely wolf” but also claimed that they might have been involved in “acting for the benefit of the perpetrators.”

Thousands of people have repeatedly gathered in Slovakia to protest FICO’s pro-Russian stance and other policies.

Fico took office for the fourth time after leftist party Smer or directed to win the 2023 parliamentary election.
