South Korean court verdict on presidential impeachment
South Korea’s constitutional court is scheduled to announce its ruling in the impeachment trial of Yoon Suk Yeol on Friday.
The GMT 0200 judgment is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the country’s future.
If the judge rejects Yuan’s impeachment each, the 64-year-old will return to the president immediately. But if improvisation is maintained, Yoon will lose his political power and a new election must be held within two months.
On December 3, right-wing conservatives briefly declared martial law in a budget dispute with the opposition, putting the country in crisis and causing him to be impeached by parliament.
Yoon justifies his drastic measures by accusing the left opposition of acting on the state and being infiltrated by the Communists, although no evidence has been provided to support these claims.
Police have announced plans to block the area around the Constitutional Court in Central Seoul. A total of 14,000 security personnel are expected to be deployed on Friday to prevent violent conflict.
