Comedy legend John Candy has appeared in many, many funny movies. They are both absolute must-sees. The tricky thing about Candy’s career, which tragically ended with the actor’s death in 1994, is that many of his “must-see” films were films in which he had small or supporting roles.
So we decided to stick with movies in which Candy stars or co-stars and put them on his “must-see” list based on our proprietary ranking algorithm.

Planes, trains and automobiles Undisputedly voted John Candy’s best film. This may also be the best Thanksgiving movie ever made.
In this John Hughes film, John Candy plays Del Griffith, a hapless and extremely annoying shower curtain ring salesman. He’s also joined by Steve Martin, who plays Neal Page, a slightly nervous marketing executive. Neil just wanted to go home and spend Thanksgiving with his family. Del just wanted to help. What follows is a series of unfortunate events as the two pair up to use any means possible to get Del back home.
Planes, trains and automobiles is a classic John Hughes comedy. The film puts the two stars into many uncomfortable situations, ultimately ending with the warmth and heart that Hughes is known for. Like most of his characters, John Candy’s Del is a lovable, bumbling fool with a good heart. There’s no better way to watch Thanksgiving Planes, trains and automobiles.
John Candy Cool Run(1993)

cool running is a Disney film loosely based on the true story of the Jamaican bobsled team’s debut at the 1988 Winter Olympics. It was also the last film released by John Candy during his lifetime.
John Candy stars as Irv Blitzer, a former two-time U.S. bobsled gold medalist who was forced to retire from the sport after being disqualified for cheating. He retired to Jamaica, where he lived in poverty as a bookmaker.
Leon Robinson stars as Derice Bannock, a Jamaican sprinter who has an idea to form a bobsled team to compete in the Olympics. He recruited several more athletes and then approached Blitzer to help train them. Blitzer didn’t want to do it when they first met, but he was eventually convinced. The story that follows follows Blitzer, Dries and others on their journey to the 1988 Winter Olympics, which is by turns hilarious and heartbreaking.
John Candy Uncle Buck(1989)

John Candy teams up with John Hughes again (six times in total) in what can be described as a guilty pleasure. Not only is Candy an Uncle Buck classic, but the film also introduced the world to Macaulay Culkin (who would star in Uncle Buck a year later). home alonein which Candy had a little involvement).
Buck, played by John Candy, is once again the hapless loser. Overweight, alcoholic, noncommittal and with few responsibilities, his brother Bob and his wife Cindy asked him to care for the children when Cindy’s father suffered a heart attack. Buck’s arrival makes the eldest daughter Tia very upset. She doesn’t care about Buck’s rules, which Cindy passed down to him. Tia and Cindy’s relationship is very tense. The other two children, Miles and Mayzie, loved Uncle Buck.
The story unfolds in comedic fashion, with Buck desperately trying to remain noncommittal about his girlfriend, Chanice, while also trying to keep Tia in line. This movie is a lot of fun, definitely a John Hughes movie, definitely a John Candy classic.
John Candy Only the Lonely (1991)

Another collaboration between John Candy and John Hughes, although this time Hughes only served as producer.
only lonely people It tells the story of 38-year-old police officer Danny Muldoon (played by John Candy) who still lives at home with his mother Rose (played by screen legend Maureen O’Hara). She is a domineering Irishman, a fiery lady who controls Danny. But Danny falls in love with Theresa (Ellie Sheedy), and Ross sees this as a threat. Rose was not a kind lady when Danny introduced Teresa to his mother. She put Teresa down and tried to shoo her away. It’s almost ready to use.
The relationship between parents and children is at the forefront of this romantic comedy, which attempts to answer the question of when children truly become parents.
parody star wars Spaceballs(1987)

Like many of John Candy’s films, he space ball. But he got enough screen time in Mel Brooks Star Wars Copy it and we include it. The film stars Bill Pullman as Lone Star, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vesper, Mel Brooks as Yogurt and President Scrubb, Rick Moranis as Black Helmet, and John Candy as Lone Star’s Barf (half man, half dog).
Mel Brooks revolutionized Star Wars with this movie, and John Candy perfectly helped make it happen. His character is naturally based on Star Wars’ Chewbacca has the same basic storyline as the original Star Wars For fans. While the film wasn’t as popular as some of Brooks’ earlier films (young frankenstein, burning saddle), it hits the funny bone multiple times.
According to Pullman, Brooks had been trying to cast Tom Cruise in the Lone Star role. When that didn’t work, he started following Tom Hanks. Then Brooks found John Candy and Rick Moranis, two of the hottest comedians at the time, so he could turn to Bill Pullman.
John Candy’s Legacy
The above films are just a small sample of John Candy’s talents. While he has appeared in some interesting movies (as mentioned above), fans remember John Candy mostly from his smaller roles.

John Candy also co-starred or starred in the following films Brewster’s Millions with Richard Pryor, Outdoor activities, past crimes, horse-drawn carriages in the East, summer rentals, and Who is Harry Crum. Most of these movies are pure silly fun. Of course, he will always be remembered as the star of the greatest Thanksgiving movie of all time.
In 1994, Hollywood actor John Candy died of a heart attack. He struggled with obesity his entire life, which left him deeply depressed. He also suffered from overeating as a way of coping with professional stress, but it didn’t help his weight. When John Candy passed away, the world lost a great, talented, and interesting man, but thankfully his legacy will live on with his classic films.
