Junteente is more than just dating, it is an important moment in American history that we should all learn and understand. As teachers, we can help our students discover powerful stories of freedom and articulate history that people often forget. This bundle of teenage activities helps students learn culture, think critically and understand the meaning of freedom. As students explore teenagers, they learn about the hope and power of African Americans struggling to be free. They began to see that freedom was not simply given to people, something people had to fight for with courage and determination.
Understanding Junteenth’s eleven helps students understand the gap between the formal end of slavery and the fact that people truly gain freedom. By teaching real history, we help students develop empathy and awareness of past injustices. Teaching students important parts of history helps them understand how silence and ignorance hurt the community. But we also showed them how they made a difference.
These activities are not only about learning history, but also about helping students become thoughtful and caring for people who want to build a equitable and inclusive society.
