Greenland leader says Trump’s threat “means you don’t want to get close to the United States”
Facing the President Trump repeatedly asserts Island Prime Minister Mute Egede said Greenland should be under control by the United States, and Mr. Trump was “so unpredictable that people feel unsafe” as global power dynamics shifted.
Egede’s interview with Dr. Danish Public Broadcasting Corporation was published on Monday, a day in publication, ahead of voters’ elections on a vast but sparsely populated island, which has been under increasing scrutiny due to Mr. Trump’s rhetoric.
Greenland is a semi-autonomous sphere of Denmark, with its own parliament, and Egge is the leader of the Ataqatigiit party, who wants independence.
“We deserve respect, and I think the president of the United States hasn’t done it lately since he took office,” Eggard said in an interview with the doctor.
“What the president of the United States has done recently means you don’t want to be as close as you did in the past (the United States),” he said. “We need to draw a line on the beach and spend more effort in countries that show us respect. The future we want painting. ”
Egged’s interview with the doctor came ahead of Mr. Trump’s latest speech on social media about Greenland, AFP reported.
“The United States strongly supports the people of Greenland to determine their future rights,” Trump said in a post later Sunday. “Just like we have since World War II, we will continue to keep you safe. We are ready to invest billions to create new jobs and make you rich – if you choose, we welcome you as part of the world’s greatest country!”
In his speech to Congress earlier this month, Mr. Trump spoke more vigorously about Greenland, where the U.S. military has the northernmost base.
The island’s location is between the United States, Russia and Europe, making it strategic for economic and defensive purposes, especially when melted sea ice opens up new transport routes in the Arctic. Greenland also has natural gas, oil and highly sought-after mineral resources.
“We need Greenland for national security, even international security,” Trump told Congress. “But we really need it to achieve international world security. I think we’ll get it – one way or another, we’ll get it. ”
