The highest number of overseas volunteers ever

Last year, Jersey’s record number applied for volunteers.

The Jersey Overseas Aid Team supports education, housing and environmental projects in Nepal, Malawi and Rwanda.

A new report shows that 126 people applied to volunteers last year – starting with 107 people the previous year.

The report said volunteering “demonstrates the islanders’ generosity and dedication to international development.”

Teachers on the island support schools in Rwanda through English coaching and guidance.

In Nepal, volunteers collaborate with charities on climate projects, and people in Malawi helped build houses.

Volunteers must pay for their own travel expenses, while the Overseas Aid Bureau funded additional costs, supplies and materials.

Since 1972, the organization has sent volunteers to aid programs from Jersey.

Carolyn Labey, Minister of International Development and Chairman of the Overseas Aid Committee, said last year’s report was “an outstanding year for our humanitarian funding.”
