A huge explosion shocked the Russian ammunition warehouse on Tuesday. The Kremlin blames it on a fire that lacks safety when working with explosives.
Video tapes and images began to surface on social media on Tuesday, showing smoke pods and fireballs identified as the 51st Missile and Artillery Agency of Russia (GRAU), a facility located in northeastern Moscow in the Vladimir region, 300 miles from the Ukrainian border.
Later there were reports of the secondary explosion. The Ukrainian Strategic Communications Center said the facility is one of the largest ammunition arsenals of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The 51st Grau in Russia is located in the Kirzach region of Vladimir. Russian state media said authorities declared a state of emergency in the region.
Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Ukrainian Center for Resistance to False Information, wrote in a message from the Telegram messaging application that Arsenal has stored about 100,000 tons of weapons. This includes shells and missiles, he said. Business insiders were unable to verify the details of the incident immediately.
The cause of the explosion was not clear at first. The Russian Ministry of Defense later provided an explanation. Although it did not determine the exact location of the explosion, it said that fires at military sites in the Vladimir region caused ammunition to detonate in the warehouse. The Kremlin said the incident will be investigated.
“According to preliminary information, no casualties were found,” the ministry said in a statement released on the telegram. “The fire was caused by a violation of safety requirements when using explosive materials.”
“Based on the findings, the guilty officials will be held responsible.”
Russian state media Tass later reported that the governor of the region injured four people in the explosion. It added that there was no death. Several settlements in the area were evacuated.
The Ukrainian military has not yet publicly commented on the bombings at the Russian facility. It regularly conducts long-range missile and drone attacks on Russia’s energy and military facilities, including ammunition depots.
Russia had a history of similar accidents on Tuesday. The ammunition depot has exploded several times. In fact, at the site, especially in the Vladimir region, four people were killed in June 2022 when internal ammunition was detonated during the unloading operation.
