Relics of the Past: The Infamous JDM Speed Bell
If you’ve ever driven an older Japanese domestic market (JDM) car, you’ve probably heard of the weird speed ringtone inside the dashboard. This unique feature, some absolutely annoying, while others have found that this feature is only for vehicles sold in Japan, so you won’t get it on Japanese rides shipped to U.S. dealers.

In the 1980s, the speed limit in Japan was set to 100 kilometers nationwide, or about 62 miles per hour. To help Japanese citizens unconsciously speed up the pace, the government stipulates that every car sold in the country must use a ringtone device, and the agency starts to appear when the speedometer reaches 104 kmh or 65 mph.
If you see the actual ringtone device, it consists of a forward in front of a spring, his two different metal plates are fast-sequential. Each plate produces a different tone, so some find crazy and others like unique sounds.
Japanese citizens are well suited for the following laws in most cases, so people are not angry about this feature as Americans do.
But as Americans import JDM vehicles when they reach 25, they can legally bring them into the country, they have learned about the speed loudness feature. Although the Japanese just accepted it, the opinions here are scattered.
Some will disassemble the dash and remove the ringtone device completely. While it’s not a super difficult task, it’s tedious, but they think it’s a necessary job to maintain sanity. After all, on any highway in the United States, you’ll be over 62 mph, so the ringtone will always sound.
Unlike the ringtones of seatbelt reminders in some newer vehicles, the harsh noise ultimately keeps the noise silent, while the JDM-speed bell doesn’t shut up until you start driving 62 mph or slow.
If you are buying a JDM car in the 1980s or early 1990s, beware of this feature.
