Californians were mailed voter guidelines on the November special election, asking whether they would reapprove the congressional district border, the Secretary of State’s office said. State agencies announced that they would mail postcards to correct the information to voters, which could cost millions of dollars.
“The accuracy of voter information is crucial to maintaining public trust in California elections,” said Secretary of State Shirley Weber. “We are taking quick, transparent actions to ensure voters receive the right information. This mislabeling does not affect the proposed region, vote or election process; it is entirely a label error. Every qualified Californian can be fully confident that their vote will be calculated and that their representation is safe.”
Voters’ guide to voters who were sent to California to register voters about the proposal 50 voters, a voting measure advocated by Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state Democrats in an attempt to increase the number of Democrats in Congress. The proposal is a response to Texas and other Republican-led countries, trying to increase the number of Republicans in the House as President Trump calls for so that he can continue to develop his own agenda during the last two years of his tenure.
The special election will be held on November 4, but voters will start accepting mail ballots in early October.
On page 11 of the Voters’ Guide, a proposed and highly competitive Congressional District, which includes the size of San Fernando and the Antelope Valley, is currently represented by Rep. George Whitesides (D-agua dulce), is mislabeled as Congressional District 22. However, in the voter’s guide, the area is a detailed map of District 27.
“Unfortunately, in the voter’s guide, it’s not correct on the statewide map,” said Paul Mitchell, a Democratic redivision expert who mapped the newly proposed congressional district. “But it’s important that it’s right on the map of Los Angeles County and Southern California,” allowing people living in the area to see exactly their newly proposed congressional district.
There are 23 million registered voters in California, but it is not clear whether the postcard will be mailed to every registered voter or family of registered voter. The Secretary of State’s office did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday night.
Even if corrective measures are mailed to voter families rather than individual voters, postage alone can be millions of dollars, besides the cost of printing postcards. The special election the Legislature demanded in August also predicts, in addition to former President Obama, former President Obama, former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and liberal protesters rep. In addition to Alexandria-cortecorte (dn.yyy) (dn.yyyy) (dn.yyyyyy), tens of thousands of dollars in campaign donations in political heavyweight campaigns and attention to campaigns are also expected to cost taxpayers $284 million.
Opponents of Proposition 50 were flooded by competitors, and they seized on the error to prove that the measure was hastily placed on the ballot.
“When politicians force the secretary of state to rush elections, there is a must-be mistake,” said Amy Thoma, a spokesman for a campaign against the effort. “Unfortunately, this will cost taxpayers millions of dollars.”
Jessica Millan Patterson, former state Republican chairman of another counter-claim 50 campaign supported by Congressional Republicans, added that such mistakes were inevitably made given the speed of writing out the voting measures and the special election.
“Greedy politicians snatched 50 power snap-ups so quickly that they made obvious mistakes that missed something, and also raised serious questions about what they were missing,” she said. “California taxpayers have started a special election of nearly $300 million, and now they are paying for it to resolve the mistakes, too. Californians deserve transparency, not falling politics. Secretary Weber should issue the cost of this correction right away.”
Activities supporting the voting measures did not respond to requests for comment.
