Finding a good horror movie remake can be difficult… for every great example, e.g. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and evil Dead (2013), there’s a big bug like this psychology (1998) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). However, it’s hard to blame the filmmakers for trying, as some of the best films in Hollywood history are remakes of yesterday’s horror films.
For example, David Cronenberg’s 1986 remake of fly (featuring a young Jeff Goldblum) is the ultimate body horror film, now more gruesome and gory than ever.

The premise is fly A charming young scientist introduces his latest invention to a cute reporter: a special remote-controlled device that can transport matter from one place to another, Star Trek-style. Faster than you can say “teleport me, hottie,” the handsome researcher didn’t realize that a tiny housefly had entered the pod with him.
Afterwards, our protagonist begins to undergo horrific physical transformations. This shift threatens to destroy his job, his relationships, and even his life.

Goldblum, in particular, makes good use of his natural charisma to make his character’s brand of mad science so alluring. Like Davis’s character, it’s easy to get carried away by the shimmering, futuristic grandeur, and when everything (especially Goldblum’s face) starts to fall apart, your heart breaks right along with hers.
Remaking a horror movie is always a risky proposition, but fly The film was a huge success, earning $60.6 on a budget of approximately $15 million. That’s enough crazy (scientific) money to warrant a sequel, but fly number two Disappointing: Neither star returned, and the follow-up film wasn’t directed by David Cronenberg. The series has been dormant since the ’80s, despite numerous projects being canceled, including an ambitious Cronenberg sequel that the studio sadly abandoned.

The film has a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the film for combining the director’s keen horror sensibility with a very strong central character. This turns what could have been a monster mayhem into a tragedy with postmodern implications.

When I was a kid I was absolutely terrified flyand those annoying special effects are a big reason why. It’s one thing to see a terrifying horror monster like Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees, but it’s quite another to see a brilliant man slowly transformed into something horrific through his own scientific arrogance. When I was little, Cronenberg’s brilliant body horror taught me an important lesson: There’s nothing that those fictional murderous villains can do that’s more horrific or harmful than what we do to ourselves.
Watching the movie now, I find Jeff Goldblum’s character to be both sympathetic and compelling. Who among us wouldn’t try to pioneer Star Trek technology if we had the brains and resources?
He’s at the forefront of breakthroughs that could revolutionize society, but he’s also a willful rebel whose willingness to cut corners and flout the rules is both his greatest strength and most fatal weakness. Worst of all, he can’t see how much he’s paving his own path to hell because he’s too busy impressing Geena Davis and making him relatable from the film’s opening to its jaw-dropping finale.
