Similarly, in 2018, a little boy slipped away from his mother during Mass, walked around the Pope’s podium and touched the Guard’s spear. “He is Argentinian and is unruly,” according to Reuters. The pope joked that Georg Gänswein, the head of the pope’s family, sat next to him.

The pope told security to keep the boy.
“This kid can’t speak. He is silent. But he can communicate. He knows how to express himself,” Reuters said. “He is free, free and unruly. But he is free. He reminds me of myself. Am I so free before God?”

Pope Francis regularly visits people with disabilities, recently visited the Centre for Children of the Blind in Hungary in 2023, and the Irmãs Alma School for Children with Disabilities in Dili, East Timor in 2024.
In 2016, he was photographed to bless a 5-year-old girl with a genetic disease that led to blindness. Lizzy Myers from Ohio has a bucket list to see the world before losing sight completely. Rome is on the list and she must meet the pope when her family visits.

When he turned 87 on December 17, 2023, Pope Francis celebrated at Santa Marta Pharmacy, a medical institution in the Vatican City, to help children and women in need.
In the video of the celebration, the children sang “Happy Birthday” to the Pope and asked them to wipe the icing from his cake.
