Orange County prosecutors said a Los Angeles police sergeant fatally attacked a 19-year-old pedestrian while drunk and then failed to stop or call the police.
Carlos Gonzalo Coronel, 40, now faces criminal charges that resulted in serious bodily injury and a crash that resulted in death, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
The crash killed Imanol Salvador Gonzalez, who prosecutors said was walking on the street in the early hours of February 1 when he was hit and then “dead on the street.”
“The royal family is accused of not stopping his truck from seeing his hit rate,” prosecutors wrote in a statement. “He did not call 911. Two people who came home from get off work that morning found Gonzalez’s body lying in the middle of Neeson Road. ”
Coronel, a Buena Park resident, had been found guilty of DUI charges in 2011 and did not compete with DUI for alcohol or drugs, according to court records.
Prosecutors said Carlonier drove to his girlfriend’s home in hours when he was accused of fatally hitting Gonzalez’s pickup truck. When she drove home the next day, he allegedly told her to take a route to avoid crashing places. On the same day, he was also charged with searching online to see if the area has reported a fatal crash, as well as a crime scene driving investigation crash at the Tustin Police Department.
“Our law enforcement officers are at the highest level of public trust, and it is unreasonable that officials who take oath and serve will die on the street after hitting him under the influence of driving alcohol,” Orange County District. “Atty. Todd Spitzer wrote in a statement. “Imanoer was loved by his family and he shouldn’t let his story end lying in the middle of a dark Tustin Street, while the policeman who hit him drove away. ”
It is not clear whether Coronel is still employed as a LAPD official. LAPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Coronel was sentenced to three years of probation in 2011, 80 hours of community service and an alcohol program after not participating in the DUI competition, according to records from the Orange County Superior Court. The case reopened for probation violations after he was arrested in February in a fatal attack. It seems that he was sentenced to 30 days in prison.
Prosecutors said the Crown would face a sentence of up to six years and eight months if convicted on all charges.
