This season, Ben Griffin has been competing every week since Sony opened.
reason? He wants to play the master.
“Adding a master has always been a childhood dream,” Griffin said in an interview. golf Before this week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open. “And, it’s so cool to get into Augusta’s season a good start this week. It’s going to take me off next week, prepare for Augusta, play there, and see where to take me to the rest of the season.”
Griffin has scored the best start of his young career in his third season on the PGA Tour, already finished three top ten, including a back-to-back T4 at the Mexican Open and Cognitive Classics. After getting to know each other, Griffin ranked 48th in the world’s official golf rankings, but fell to 53rd in back-to-back layoffs for players and Valspar.
This is important because after this week, OWGR’s top 50 players won an invitation to the Masters. Girffin has never played in his first major this year, so he is starting the season with his solid game and is playing as much as he can.
“I dreamed of going on the PGA tour, and I tried to play as many games as possible,” Griffin said. “But if I asked my 16-year-old self now, if I had a place in the Houston Open, I would say “absolutely say,” whether you or don’t want to stay in my home anymore.
“It’s fun. I don’t mind. Even in Week 12, I still feel fresh. I’ll keep going. I love that.”
Griffin is not alone in pushing the master. Michael Kim also competes weekly since Sony – in addition to the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Kim has reached No. 52 in the world when he was seeking Augusta’s first trip since 2019.
Kim has become one of the stars of golf Twitter in recent years, and his match finally started at the WM Phoenix Open with a T2 and two other top ten, including the T2 ending at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, an autograph event.
“I’m really smoking right now,” he wrote on Twitter earlier this week. “The back and neck aren’t feeling good and have been ready for a while. But! I have more opportunities to qualify as a master. I’ll need a top 20 to get a seat. At this point, I’ll be happy with my vacation, but I want to give myself a chance.”
