During Jack Robinson’s WSL Championship tour, he left his long-term residence in Australia’s Margaret River for qualifying. He has roots near the Gold Coast, over 2,000 miles, so he can upgrade in a more “average” wave than the barrels he is used to in Western Australia. It stems from logic, because these are if he wants to shoot into the CT, he needs to stand out.
This is a wise move that has paid off well for Robbo. In the seven-game victory, his ribs riding on the tube have not yet put down an Iota. But the thing is, Goldie does get really, really good from time to time. For example, like this historic whirlwind Alfred Swell.
Earlier this week, the swelling line swelling to the superbank sandbank looked ridiculous before the storm approached land. Jack looked at home. He weaves, stalls and carves with trademark efficiency. In the early stages of the Bender, he rowed alongside everyone else and then rode on a motorboat when the waves got another gap.
