Affleck conveys John’s ongoing chaos and excitement perfectly, and he does seem like someone who has lost himself in space.

Because most of this story unfolds from John’s perspective, we don’t have that much time with Captain Franks or Nash. Both men obviously have their own mental health problems. But the way they react around John makes it an open question of whether he can trust his feelings when it comes to crew and friends.

As for Capone, Nash’s ongoing paranoia is easier to understand when it seems that the task is indeed in a failed state. Nash’s fear eventually blends into John’s fear, which leads to an already dangerous voyage to the brink of disaster.
