This clever tool helped me eliminate “blind spots” in my practice

For many golfers, fall marks the end of the season. As the temperatures drop, so do your chances of sneaking into the Twilight Zone after get off work. Living in New York City, I know the struggles all too well.
Luckily, the rise of indoor simulators has made it easier than ever for those of us who live in colder climates to play games during the winter months.
Instead of storing my clubs until spring, I can use these crucial offseasons to learn the basics, change up my swing, and even try out gear.
But as much as I love the convenience and technology that emulators provide, they often overlook one crucial detail: reference points.
On a traditional outdoor driving range, you’re surrounded by subtle marks—old divots, broken tees, alignment poles, etc.—that can help you fine-tune your setup. They quietly guide your alignment, form and ball placement. Indoors, however, most batting cages are just a small patch of green grass. No built-in prompts, no feedback—just you, a mat, and a screen.
Without visual checkpoints, people can easily develop bad habits. One mistake I find myself making in simulator training is gradually moving my ball position too far. I don’t even know why I did it, but it made my strike fail. The worst part? It feels normal. So this mistake followed me to my outdoor range where it began to wreak havoc on my ball striking and consistency.
While the fix is easy, it usually took me a while to figure out the problem, which goes to show how sneaky and persistent some bad habits can become without clear visual feedback.
The alignment rod certainly helps, but I wanted something more practical. Small, lightweight, and easy to throw in my bag without even thinking about it.
That’s when I spotted the towel stand next to the swing board.
