At least three people in northern Italy have been killed in Italy after heavy rains as snowfall disturbed neighbouring Switzerland.

Northern Italy has been hit hard by severe rainfall, with Piedmont, South Tyrol and Lombardy severely affected.

The father and son died when their cars were taken away by floods near Valdano between Venice and Lake Garda.

A 92-year-old man died in a house near Turin on Thursday.

Things are expected to calm down on Friday, but many rivers have broken banks, causing flooding in multiple areas.

Emergency services have put dozens of people safely, while some areas have cut off power.

Piedmont has provided €5 million ($5.7 million) in emergency assistance.

The downpour caused severe damage shortly before Easter weekend, and ties between Austria, Italy and Switzerland were delayed.

Parts of Switzerland have also been cut off due to snowfall, popular alpine ski resorts have been cut off, and many places have no electricity.

Authorities say critical transport routes such as Simpleon Pass and Great St Bernard tunnels remain closed.

They added that the risk of avalanche and the risk of falling trees are high.

More than half a meter of fresh snow reportedly hit the area on Thursday.
