Three people were sentenced to jail for smuggling cocaine during a flight in Sydney

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said on Monday that three men were sentenced to up to more than 15 years in prison for their role in failing to smuggle 100 kilograms of cocaine into Australia.

According to police, the men are part of an incident where drugs freighted by Sydney passengers from Johannesburg in October 2023.

“Two of them were between 63 and 57” identified as trusted insiders used their work at Sydney Airport to facilitate import of drugs from inbound flights, AFP said in a statement. ”

The 63-year-old was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while the 57-year-old man (formerly airline logistics manager) was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in the program.

A 25-year-old third man was sentenced to two years and nine months. Police said his role was to collect cocaine from the airport area to start distribution in Australia. ”

AFP said two more people who are considered part of the “suspected criminal group” are still in court.
