Timetable, format and what has changed

If you’re on the airing of the final round of the Wyndham Championship on Sunday, you might notice that at the top of the rankings, there’s a lot of attention to players. That’s because, as the last game of the regular PGA Tour, the Wyndham Championship is very important: It represents the ultimate opportunity for players to get a spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs that began this week.
FedEx St. Jude is the first game of the 2025 FedEx Cup playoff series. How does everything work? Here’s everything you need to know.
Overview
Starting from January, for every game, the PGA Tour player competed, and he earned FedEx Cup points based on his end. The winner of the player championship and Grand Slam scored 750 points; the winner of the signature event scored 700 points; the winner of the entire game scored 500 points (except the Zurich Classic, each winning team member awarded 400 points); the winner of other events scored 300 points. Other players in each field earn points at their end.
At the end of the regular season (Wyndham Champion), the top 70 players on the FedEx Cup Points List are eligible for the first FedEx Cup playoff event, FedEx St. Jude. No. 70, the difference between Matti Schmid, who is, and No. 71, Davis Thompson, who is outside? Only 5 points.
Format
Scottie Scheffler was the highest-ranking player on the roster to enter the first playoff event, scoring 4,806 points, followed by Rory McIlroy’s 3,444 points, while Sepp Straka had 2,595 points. Schmid mentioned above is in 70th place with 620 points.
Over the next two weeks, 70 players at FedEx St. Jude Stadium can take up their current total FedEx Cup points, while four-football scores can be caught – the winner is 2,000 points. So if you perform well, there are many opportunities to improve upward.
At the end of FedEx St. Jude, the top 50 players will enter the BMW Championship, where they will once again use FedEx Cup points to total and once again have a chance to win four times the points. At the end of the BMW Championship, the top 30 players will enter the season finale, the Tour Champions, with the score no longer relevant and they will compete in the FedEx Cup Champions game.
2025 FedEx Cup Playoffs Schedule
Three playoff games will be held in a row for weeks:
FedEx St. Jude – August 7th to 10th
BMW Champion – August 14-17
Tour Championship – August 21-24
What changes have happened this year?
This year, players will be ranked at the Racing Championships from the start, rather than getting a “starting stroke” at the Tour Championship based on their FedEx Cup points, but compete on an even playing field from the start. Over the next two weeks, they can offer four opportunities to win or maintain themselves in the top 30. But once you go in, you’re in, you have the same chance as anyone else.
To better understand the performance of the season, the $100 million bonus wallet for the FedEx Cup is also changing. It will be distributed in three events: at the end of the Wyndham Championship (paid to the top 10 players in the FedEx Cup Points Ranking); at the end of the BMW Championship (paid to the top 30 players in the ranking); and at the end of the Tour Championship (paid to the top 30 players in the ranking). Spoiler Alert: Scottie Scheffler has earned a top prize of $10 million from his regular season rankings after Wyndham.
The Tour champion will provide a $40 million wallet and will win a $10 million championship.
What about the players who didn’t make the playoffs?
For those outside the top 70 and those ending the top 50 after this week, the next few weeks offer a brief chance to reset before the start of FedEx Cup Fall Flow: a seven-game series that will begin in September and will finish the next 100 in the standings.
All points earned through FedEx St. Jude will continue into the fall. At the end of the fall series (RSM Classic in November is the last game), FedEx Cup No. 51-60 will qualify for the first two signature events of the 2026 Sentinels.
As for everyone else? There is always a Q school, and in the 2026 season, there are five tour cards to snap up.
