Holger Ruhn got off to a flying start at the BNP Paribas Nordic Open with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Marton Fucsovics in Stockholm on Thursday. Rooney reached his third consecutive ATP Tour quarter-finals and will next face Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Rooney won his first hard-court title at the Stockholm ATP 250 in 2022 and is seeking a second trophy in 2025 following a victory on clay in Barcelona – a result that would see him leapfrog Casper Ruud into 11th place heading into the PIF ATP Live event in Turin.

The Dane won the Lexus ATP series against Fucovic 15/40 on serve in the middle to improve his record to 2-0. Rooney saved eight out of nine break points, while Fucovic’s only break proved harmless at 5-2 in the first set, according to Infosys ATP statistics.

“He was really passing the ball, so I had to make a good play,” Ruane said of his opponent’s late charge. “I had to step up at the end because he wouldn’t give me the ball. It was difficult to end the game, but obviously I’m very happy with my performance. I thought it was a great game for both of us.”

Earlier on Thursday in Stockholm, fourth seed Ugo Humbert beat Matteo Berrettini 7-6(5), 6-3. The Frenchman converted two break opportunities and faced no break points on his own serve.

In his fourth quarterfinal match of the season, Humbert will be looking for a perfect 4-0 scoreline against Lorenzo Sonego. He has an 11-1 record in his last 12 indoor matches, trailing last year’s Paris Rolex Masters final and victory in Marseille earlier this season.
