Relaxed, unhurried, quiet and backed by unwavering confidence, Learner Tian exudes ease as he looks back on a breakthrough season that put the ATP Tour on the map.
At just 19 years old, the rising American broke into title contention at the 2024 Next Generation ATP Finals presented by PIF and is now back in action in the 20-and-under category in 2025 as one of the players to watch. His year was marked by a string of firsts and milestones, including a maiden ATP 250 title in Metz, making him one of the fastest climbing talents in the sport.
In the first episode of the new Journey to Jeddah series, Tenn looks back at his earliest memories on the court, shares what he learned during his first year on tour, and talks about competition, pressure and why friendships with peers are more important than most people realize.
“I think all the young people do a good job of pushing each other. It helps seeing familiar faces in a new place,” Tian said. “There are so many people living much the same life as you…it’s reassuring to know you have so much in common with the people around you.”
Japanese player Rei Sakamoto also became the center of attention in the first episode. The 19-year-old, known for his self-proclaimed eccentric personality and booming serve, is making a crucial transition from juniors to the ATP Tour and ATP Challenger Tour. Coach Federico Ricci is encouraged by Sakamoto’s development but stressed the importance of focus as the next phase of his career begins to unfold.
