Trump said the United States will support Ukraine’s security and details are being resolved.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on Monday that he has not discussed specific security assurances in Ukraine and reiterated the U.S. commitment to support the country.
Ukraine’s potential security assurance represents the main obstacle to ending Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Trump also said at a meeting with Alaska Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, two leaders discussed limiting the size of the country’s large-scale nuclear arsenal once the Ukrainian crisis is resolved.
“We want to denuclearize. That’s too much, and we talked about that, too. It’s part of it, but we have to fight it,” Trump told reporters gathered in the Oval Office.
When asked why Putin seemed reluctant to sit down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Trump replied: “Because he doesn’t like him.”
