Nearly 13,000 civilians in Ukraine since the beginning of the war
The United Nations estimates that about 13,000 civilians have been killed since the beginning of the Ukrainian war.
According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), at least 12,910 civilians died (including 682 children) in Ukraine and nearly 30,700 were injured between 24 February 2022 and 31 March 2025.
Fletcher added that the real loss could be even greater.
It is reported that between the end of February and the end of March, more than 170 civilians were killed.
Russia’s strike continued to capture civilian life, most recently in the industrial city of Kryvyi Rih, where missiles attacked a playground.
Fletcher stressed that international law is eroding in other conflicts in Ukraine and around the world.
“We are not only unsteady in our perseverance towards international law, but in some cases, we support its derogatoryness,” Fletcher asserted. “This is the common point that connects these conflicts. If your principles apply only to your opponents, they are not humanitarian principles.”
