Türkiye detains dozens of people on social media posts

Türkiye has detained 37 suspects on suspicion of detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, the interior minister said on Thursday.

Turkey on Wednesday detained President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main rival Imamoglu, which included grafting and helping terrorist groups, the main opposition party, criticized as “a coup against the next president.”

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on X that Turkish authorities are detaining Imamoglu and 105 other suspects Ali Yerlikaya said at X.

The minister said that within less than 24 hours after he was detained, 18.6 million posts were shared on X.

Violating a temporary ban on demonstrations, hundreds of people took to the streets to support Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and protested against the Erdogan government.

Türkiye also occupied a construction company jointly owned by Imamogru, the office of the chief prosecutor in Istanbul said.

The prosecutor’s office said in a statement late Wednesday that the court’s control over Imamoglu construction, trade and industry was taken over, according to the Financial Crime Investigation Report.
