Two earthquakes hit Riverside County near Idyllwild

Two Thanksgiving Day earthquakes were reported in Riverside County around dinner time Thursday.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. in the San Jacinto Mountains about 6 miles southwest of Idyllwild. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first earthquake was a magnitude 3.8, followed a minute later by a magnitude 3.5 quake.

The earthquake was about 4 miles from Valle Vista, 8 miles from Hemet, 9 miles from San Jacinto and 13 miles from Beaumont. Residents reported feeling mild to moderate tremors as far east as Cathedral City and Indio and as far west as Murrieta.

A spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said there were no reports of damage from the minor earthquake.

The Southern California earthquake follows two earthquakes near San Juan Bautista on the Central Coast. The first was a magnitude 3.9 earthquake at 12:48 p.m., followed by a magnitude 4.0 earthquake at 12:57 p.m.

In the past 10 days, no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or above occurred near the earthquake site in Riverside County.
