Natural Hazard Portal Launched in Germany

Germans seeking information and advice on extreme weather events or any other natural disasters can turn to a new centralized website.

The Natural Hazard Portal (NGP) will help citizens answer an urgent question: is my house or am I in danger? Digital Minister Volker Wissing said Friday.

“This makes life in Germany safer,” Vysing said in his post on the city’s portal.

Sarah Jones, head of the German Meteorological Service, said the website brings together current warnings, scientific analysis and forecasts.

The portal contains information in German and English to prepare for dangers such as flooding or extreme cold and when citizens find themselves affected by extreme weather.

In the coming emergency, Germany already has a national warning system.

NGP is developed by the Ministry of Meteorological Services and 16 federal states and civil protection offices in Germany.

The site is currently focused on hydrological hazards such as floods and storms. However, the portal will gradually expand to include other natural hazards such as ozone pollution, forest fires, droughts, avalanches and earthquakes.

The monitors at the German Meteorological Agency (DWD) site display information about the current weather. DWD introduces a dangerous portal designed to better prepare for extreme natural events such as heavy rains, heat waves and droughts, while providing information about their potential consequences.
