I just want to make a confession here and end all confessions: Charlize Theron scares the hell out of me. she can put her hand in Extremely cold cityruthlessly carving a way through the wasteland Mad Max: Fury Roadstaring into your soul while drinking your wine under the table young adult. Her range is palpable and her characters’ violent tendencies always seem real. If there’s one film that truly embodies this, it’s 2003’s monsterThe crime drama fictionalizes the life and times of serial killer Aileen Wuornos, who gunned down seven men between 1989 and 1990.
although monster Charlize Theron took appropriate creative liberties with her portrayal of Wuornos for dramatic effect, and it’s absolutely perfect. If you don’t believe me, you can watch the Netflix documentary Erin: Serial Killer Queen as a frame of reference. If you want to know more deeply, last podcast on the left A heavyweight series on Wuornos has also been produced, including readings of her personal letters. With this in mind, if you enter monster You know this is more of a character study than an accurate account of historical events, and you’ll be blown away by Theron’s performance because she’s clearly done her research.
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

Theron not only looks like the character monsterbut her mannerisms are so spot-on that you forget you’re reading a novel. We’re introduced to Wuornos when she meets her love interest Selby Wall (Christina Ricci), a fictionalized version of her real-life partner Tyria Moore. The story here is simple and doesn’t require much unpacking. Wuornos and Wall hit it off immediately, and the two moved into a motel together with grand plans to make enough money to own their own place and live on their own terms.
While working the streets, Wuornos was brutally attacked by a customer named Vincent and shot him in retaliation. After disposing of his body and stealing his car, she vowed to quit prostitution, but failed every time she tried because she had zero work experience.

After promising to support Wall financially, she continued working on the streets, but each encounter became increasingly violent. She shot her pursuers and stole their car, always claiming self-defense, although she was described as having the upper hand in most situations. Naturally, this caused a rift in the relationship, leading to Wuornos being imprisoned, sentenced, and ultimately executed.
Not historically accurate, but a huge character study

Although the series of events described in the book monster Not a faithful retelling of Wuornos’ life and relationships, but thanks to Charlize Theron’s willingness to give it her all, the character study is definitely worth watching. Wuornos, who has been officially diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder, is known to have violent mood swings, which are well documented. Watch any interview with her on YouTube or Netflix and you’ll notice her transformation from warm and personable to downright menacing, like a switch flipped in her head. Theron brings this energy to monster It’s so effortless, it’s truly disturbing.

Enter monster As a novel based on a true story, it was a no-brainer that Theron would win an Oscar for her portrayal of Erin Wuornos. Her physical transformation is jarring in itself, but even more disturbing is how comfortable she looks embodying the character. Much like the real-life counterpart the film explores, we see an emotionally unstable woman transform from street worker to ruthless serial killer in a very short period of time. She was ruthless as she claimed yet another victim on the street. As soon as she got home, she felt warm and fuzzy, like she’d just gotten back from get off work.

As a true crime film next to a movie theater, monster If you’re looking for a detailed account of events, it won’t suffice. As a work of fiction and character study, this is the perfect movie if you want a masterclass in storytelling. As of this writing, you can watch the show for free on Amazon Prime Video.
