We played the Nintendo Switch 2.

name Nintendo’s Switch successor seems simple, but developers say they spent years in the development process brainstorming and canceling them. Eventually, producer Kouichi Kawamoto, director Takuhiro Dohta and technical director Tetsuya Sasaki landed on one of their unconventional routes: Switch 2.

They first discussed calling it the “Super Nintendo Switch,” Kawamoto told the media at a private event in New York City, paying tribute to the high jump from the original Nintendo to the Super Nintendo console, but there is one important difference. NES and SNE do not share compatibility between games.

“We wanted to make sure that the name really reflects the idea that this is the latest Nintendo Switch, which is the latest standard, and is the newest standard for the Nintendo Switch,” Kawamoto added.

After several hours of using hybrid handheld in a hands-on event, this description feels right. Switch 2 is not a leap forward, because the original switch comes from Wii U, but is the product of iteration. It is a series of ideas and designs, refined, creating a product that is both familiar and improved from its predecessor.

Bigger. Nintendo raised the handheld size from the original 6.2-inch screen to a 7.9-inch LCD display and magnetized its Joy-Con controllers, which are also slightly longer to adapt to changes. In my hands, the difference is almost no obvious. The Switch 2 can still hold and play as comfortable as a handheld handheld, neither heavy nor too clumsy. My iPhone has a harder tactile upgrade.

During the event, I played the newly announced Mario Karting World It’s both on the console itself and on the TV, with the grip of the joyous instrument. I’ve always preferred the handheld mode of the original system and the experience of playing on the Switch 2 is roughly the same.

The biggest change in Joy-CON’s feature is its new mouse-like mode. Although the Joy-Cons from the previous system slides off the handheld, the operation on the switch 2 is magnetic. They will be taken away by clicking the release button on the back of the controller. To replay, you can simply reopen them with a very satisfying click. However, once removed from the handheld, both can be used separately or together as improvised mice, placing them on the surface on the normally attached dot.

My experience with mouse features is somewhat popular or missed. I played two games: Drag the X drivewheelchair basketball game, Metroid 4: Beyond. Drag the X driveannounced in the event’s summer release, while using Joy-Cons, the left and right controls correspond to the respective wheels. To move, you push the joy device to whatever surface you can find – Nintendo sets up a large flat-bottom table for the demo, but they also work well on the surface of my clothes (including leggings), which means your knees do in a pinch.

Whether you slide them over any available surfaces you have to woven on the court, rotate the virtual wheels to perform tricks, or shoot by flipping your hands, whether you slide them over any available surfaces, there is a constant movement, no matter you slide them over any available surfaces. Technically speakingit’s all good. But physically, it’s very tiring. My arms will be sore quickly and I can’t imagine a long game unless I decide to suddenly get really good on the Pilates.

Metroid 4: BeyondThe experience is much better. As a very bad shot, I can use some work on the goal of a typical controller, and Joy-Cons is off and free to swing, and I’m even worse. However, with the new mouse function, I was able to use the correct Joy-Con on the desk to stabilize my swing and actually hit the target.

The most impressive thing about this experience is the ability to seamlessly switch from regular Joy-Con controls to mouse functionality. However, according to director Takuhiro Dohta, how players use the feature is all up to the game during a developer roundtable with Press. “We hope this is an available option for developers to explore,” Dohta said. “If a [developer] Determine that it is actually best to convert it from mouse control to a settings or switch for the Joy-Con control, which can also be used. ”
