The birth rate in the United States has been declining since 2007, and although no specific decisions were made, President Trump himself was recently asked about the potential $5,000 incentives at White House events and said: “It sounds like a good idea to me.”

As many have pointed out, the $5,000 bonus doesn’t address many reasons why women choose not to have children. These reasons include one-third of the country living in the “maternal medical desert”, high maternal mortality rates in minority communities, and many studies suggest that numerous abortion bans increase existing health disparities.

In addition to physical risks, caring for children is very expensive. According to recent analysis, children from birth to 18 years old, including housing, parenting, food and clothing, cost an average of nearly $300,000.

House Speaker Mike Johnson recently spoke about potential baby bonuses and responded to the idea that the idea is designed to increase the number of white babies in the United States. “It’s absolutely ridiculous…We’re Republican. We’re a pro-family party and we’ve always been there. We’re proud of it. We want to build a culture of life in the United States. We want to promote policies that help families.”
