Why Donald Trump’s Trump Steak Failed Only 2 Months

Before Donald Trump became president–the idea of going back to running didn’t even cross his idea, “Apprentice” did a great job in the reality show world. Trump steak became popular in 2007 and they sold a variety of steaks, hamburgers and hot dogs.
You can’t just go into the local Walmart and pick up “the greatest steak in the world” (the slogan of Trump steak). Instead, you can only order through Sharper Image – a service ordered on the website, store and catalog focus on home and lifestyle products – and the QVC shopping channel. This even added exclusivity to Trump’s products before getting the beef certification and details of its origins.
Trump steak does have certification marking quality steak. When picking steaks in the grocery store, you are looking for Prime Crapeing – you can get the best grades from USDA grade beef. All products of Trump steak come with USDA Prime Seal and are provided by Buckhead beef owned by Sysco. So with a well-known source of information and such a great certification, the reason this company won’t take off, right?

Starting in May 2007, it took about two months to image websites, and Trump Steak barely sold steak for such a large project. As a result, the steak was pulled out of the Sparter Image directory and removed from the QVC shortly thereafter. The availability of Trump steaks is directly dependent on sharp image and ultimately a barrier. Not everyone can easily buy the product without being able to buy steak in a local store. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of cravings from existing Sharper Image customers to raise a large frozen steak either. Additionally, Sparper Picture filed for bankruptcy just one year after Trump’s steak stunt.
Ultimately, Trump’s steak really doesn’t make consumers as amazed as Donald Trump. Looking back at the Trump steak review, many people bought a cut and were disappointed with the faint taste and grainy texture. One anonymous consumer even pointed out: “Nothing in the series seems to prove the asking price. There is a better steak there” (via GQ). Even those who think the products aren’t too bad, still think they’re overpriced. When you pay at least $100 for Donald Trump’s products (plus shipping) you should at least get the experience that matches the description. Otherwise, it makes total sense to throw Trump’s steak on the side and choose something reliable, such as buying meat with a local butcher to get a good steak.
