World War II-era explosives found during construction at Port of Long Beach

A construction crew made a shocking discovery Wednesday afternoon when they stumbled upon a World War II-era explosive device in the Port of Long Beach, authorities said.

The eight-year-old shell was found at one of the port’s six container terminals, according to a port spokesman.

Long Beach police and fire departments and the U.S. Coast Guard evacuated the terminal and established a security perimeter, while the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad responded and assessed the situation. The remaining terminals continue to operate normally during this period.

The U.S. Marine Corps Ordnance Disposal Team subsequently determined that the device was safe to transport and removed it from the site, where it was decommissioned.

The port resumed normal operations Wednesday night.
