Xai, Elon Musk’s AI company, just bought X, Elon Musk’s social media company
According to a post shared by Musk, Elon Musk’s AI company XAI has purchased X. In addition to their similar name and owners, the companies are also connected through XAI’s chatbot Grok, which has been integrated into X.
X is acquired through an all-stock. “The portfolio is worth $80 billion in XAI and $33 billion (reducing $45B debt),” Musk wrote. “The futures of Xai and X are intertwined.” The two companies plan to expand “Xai’s advanced AI capabilities” as a social platform. Apart from that, the post provides little detail, but the motivation may be as financial as practical.

X, then Twitter, was acquired by Musk for $43 billion in 2022. Like many of the leading AI companies, Xai has been raising funds as soon as possible. In addition to the vague potential benefits of social media posts to train AI, the two companies could also alleviate the debt Musk brought in private Twitter. The billionaire stood out with Tesla in 2016, when the automaker merged with Solarcity for $2.6 billion.
