Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch was upsetting some fans Wednesday for one key reason: the price. The new console will be released on June 5 at a starting price of $450, and it will have new games like Mario Kart World, Kirby Air Riders and Donkey Kong Kong Bananza. But these games can cost as much as $80 (this is before taking into account possible tariffs).
Fortunately, Nintendo also announced that some Nintendo Switch games will receive free updates to improve the playability of the upcoming console.
“By connecting your Nintendo Switch 2 to the Internet, you can download free updates to improve performance or increase support for features like Gameshare in selected games,” the company released.
Here are all Nintendo Switch games that can be updated with Switch 2 for free.
Nintendo also announced that other Switch games will be upgraded to the basic game version, called Switch 2 Editions. These games include The Legend of Zelda: Breathing Out of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, which may offer improved graphics, unique ways to play games with Switch 2 hardware, and other features.
If you are buying digital or physical copies of these games for the first time, you can purchase digital copies of these games. However, if you already have a switch version of one of the games, the Switch 2 Edition game is not free, so you have to purchase an upgrade package to play the updated version.

It is not clear how much the Switch 2 game and upgrade package will cost, and it is not clear how the upgrade package will be used with the physical version of the Switch game.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will also be backward compatible with certain games. While we don’t know all the switch games that can be played on the Switch 2, we know that some Switch games have boot (PDF) or in-game (PDF) compatibility issues, the upcoming console.
