An official from the U.S. Consulate visited Polikov in prison earlier this week. The U.S. Embassy in Delhi did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation of access or any further updates to Polyakov.
Police said Polikov conducted a detailed study of ocean conditions, tides and acceptability before embarking on the journey. He stayed on the beach for about an hour, whistling to attract people’s attention, but received no response from the islanders.
The young American has tried to visit the island twice in the past and left a can of dietary coke and coconut as a service provided by the tribe after he failed to contact Sentinelese. He took videos of the island on camera and collected some sand samples before returning to the boat.
After being arrested, the charity Survival International issued a statement saying Polikov’s behavior was “deeply disturbing/”
